Class Descriptions

Piano Class:

Along with Orchestra classes, a Piano Lab is now located at Fossil Creek Music Studio! A class of 10 students will meet for 50 minutes once per week for piano instruction through the Bastien Piano Method. The classes are arranged by age groups and are for thoses with little or no experience. So whether you're 5 or 95, we have a piano bench waiting for you?

For age 1- Twinkle Music:

This program will offer instruction of basic music melodies and development of fine motor skills. Singing familiar songs aids in speech development while mirroring simple body movements to music increase a toddler’s coordination. The primary purpose is to promote responses to music.

For age 2- Music Movers:

This program will be an advancement of the Twinkle Music class with slightly higher level movements and dancing to music. Music time will expand their memory and multiply the effect on their reasoning skills. More questions are asked to encourage participation, concentration and conversational efforts. Particular emphasis is placed on this age’s kinesthetic needs to move!

For age 3- Discovery Kids:

This program will explore the creative skills and encourage imagination of the Discovery Kids.

Designed for children 3 years old, this class provides opportunities for establishing a relationship with music. Activities include singing, listening discrimination games, creative movement and dancing, exploration of all instrument families, rhythm instrument playtime, and an introduction of musical symbols.

The musical learning objectives of this class are establishing beat vs. rhythm, high vs. low, loud vs. soft, and fast vs. slow. The students will be reading simple rhythms, recognizing at least 3 notes, tone matching, all while having FUN through vocal and dance play.

In addition, students will develop their knowledge of numbers, colors, shapes and letters, which boosts their reading readiness. They will improve language skills through vocal play. They will move from imitation play to their own self-expression, developing creativity in their movement and increasing their confidence. Dance movement will increase coordination, gross loco motor and fine motor skills.

For age 4- High Discovery Kids

This program will be an advancement of the lower level 3 year old class and moves into more terminology and symbol recognition as the children are ready to advance. Their continued musical exposures reinforce their development of logical and perceptual ideas, such as cause and effect. Students will also gain a greater understanding of how music is used in their daily lives.

For age 5- Instrument Explorers

Not quite ready for an instrument? This class is designed as a pre-requisite for learning piano or any other instrument, perfect for ages 5 to 7 years. Taught by an experienced public school teacher, students will reinforce their knowledge of numbers, letters and reading skills as they learn the fundamentals of reading music. They will learn to read and notate rhythms, learn note names, identify pitches on the staff and sight sing. Throughout the semester, students are exposed to the piano, violin, cello and rhythm instruments. Classes will also cover musical eras, instrument families, dynamics and tempo.

Musical play is a great way to establish sequencing and abstract thinking skills. Instrument Explorers will enhance their self-confidence, imagination and social skills while preparing to take on a more intense future music study.

For age 6- High Instrument Explorers

This is an advanced class based on the same principles as Instrument Explorers. Students advance to improvising and composing their own music. With the threatening contents of music on the radio, continued guided music experiences begin to teach young children to make judgments about what constitutes as “good” music, thereby developing in them the rudiments of an aesthetic sense.

Bel Canto Singing:

If you've ever wanted to learn the basics of proper singing, this class covers the techniques in a group setting. You will learn exercises and vocal warm-ups to improve your breath control and range while also applying your knowledge to fun choral and solo songs.
